As a result of the success of the Spring and Fall Over 50's Bike Rides, the City of White Rock, in conjunction with South Surrey Cycles (SSC) is pleased to announce the formation of a seniors bicycle club. The objective is to provide local seniors (over 45 years) with an opportunity to ride with others of similar ages, fitness levels and skills.
One issue that has been raised is the type of riding that will be supported. The answer is everything! There are 2 styles of club rides; one is for riders with 'road racing' style bikes, and the second is for general, mountain, and everyday bikes (e.g. hybrids). And you get to pick either or both. Ride leaders are available for each of the groups, and members will be able to contact each other to arrange their own individual rides, outside the regularly scheduled rides.
In addition to weekly local rides, there will be scheduled 'away' rides (e.g. Stanley Park, Steveston, etc) on a regular basis, as the City has a 13 seater van and bicycle trailer that will be available to the Club.
Each club member will have to purchase a $30 per annum Leisure Services membership, which will also provide discounts for other City programs, as well as 15% discount on clothing, accessories, and parts purchases from South Surrey Cycles.
We have created a Facebook account (White Rock O-5-O Bicycle Club)
where you can access up to date information about the club, in
particular, the ride schedules. In addition, it enables you to contact other members and create your own rides in your own time.
So if you and any of your friends are interested in riding with other seniors, come and join the club and find other seniors to ride with.
For further information please call South Surrey Cycles at (604) 531-5004, or log on to the Facebook account (White Rock O-5-O Bicycle Club).
N.B. As of March 2010, there are more than 60 members in the club, with 44 members using the clubs Facebook site.
